BIG WINTER

As you can tell by the lack of Post this Season we have had a BIG WINTER! I skied my 70th day on Tuesday of which 55 were powder days! Not much need to head for the backcountry due to the fact there is no shortage of Pow inside the resorts! The storm cycles that have hit Utah this year have not been duplicated since 1947 and may not see them again in our lifetimes, unless you are 3 right now! The gear I have been using this year has been the right tools for the job!, Ultra fat, 110 cm under foot and soft! I could go on but need to rest up, yep another storm on the way, 4"-8" Friday and another 12"-18" Monday, Tuesday! What a way to go, "Death By Powder" YeeHaw!!!
Some killer deals from Evogear on the Upper Right Link. If you in the market for some new toys check it out!

Getting some new runs ready to open and turn into perfect

great example of how much work goes into it!

PARK CITY GETS 1' OF NEW SNOW!

BRING IT ON!

As of last night we had picked up about 2" of new snow.
When I woke up this morning there was about 1 Foot!
DEER VALLEY opens tomorrow 12/8/07!
This storm arrived just in time &The Forecast looks really promising
The Current radar shows bands of snow that will keep periods of snow happening.
We will see periods of snow through Saturday with a good shot this evening.
Southwest winds will pick up later this morning.
Temperatures will stay in the low to mid 20s for most of the day
before colder air moves in tonight as the surface low passes just to our south.
We’ll probably see Upwards of 2 Feet Total by the time it’s done.
Things will taper off by Sunday.

Just in Time for Park City!

Big storm just in time! Deer Valley's Opening Day is Saturday.

Today should be the last warm day as we have a weak cold front that should bring us a couple inches of new snow overnight and cool ridge top temperatures down to the mid to lower 20’s. Ridgetop winds should blow from the West and Northwest around 15 mph.
But the big news is that we should get a big, wet, closed low pressure system, which looks like it will give us 1-2 FEET of snow by the end of the weekend! The action should begin on Friday and last through Sunday. The center of the low pressure should come right over us, which makes the storm tricky because if we remain in the eye of the storm, there isn’t enough wind to push the moist air up the mountains and the mountains end up with the same amount of precipitation as the valleys. Hopefully, the center of the low will wander a bit and give us a much-need shot of snow. Keep your fingers crossed & Pray For Snow!

IT'S WINTER IN PARK CITY!

Winter Has Arrived!

It snowed about 8" last night & it's been snowing all day!
Just in time for DEER VALLEY'S Opening Day.

The temperatures have been really cold for the last couple of weeks so all the Resorts have been making the "White Stuff" like crazy! This boost from Mother Nature will really help!
Park City Mountain Resort & The Canyons
have been open for a week but the conditions have been marginal at best.
The Skis are Tuned and the Shorts & Flip-Flops are put away.
It's hard to believe I was surfing in Baja last week, Warm Water & Air!

What a Difference a Week Makes!

Fish On in Iceland

This is on the Famous Icelandic River Laxa Fnjoska.
Known as an Atlantic Salmon River it holds some nice Brown Trout.
The fish were the bonus on this trip with the People and the Natural Beauty the highlight.
This is the only day we had with overcast and chilly temps still comfy!
Hard to believe we are at 66 Degrees North Latitude!

Fun at the Arctic Circle

This photo was taken in Husavik, a small town in the north of Iceland. It was so amazing that we were almost at the Arctic Circle and the temps were in the 70's! This was a break from fishing all morning on the LAXA' a famous trout river in
Iceland. Husavik was a whaling town that now is a tourist stop for whale watching and great restaurants! The people are the most friendly of anywhere I have ever been and the countryside is absolutely beautiful! The fishing was fantastic and the Brown Trout are as healthy as can be! I can't wait to return to the coolest country I have ever visited.

Kayak Park City and Utah

Most people don't think of Utah as a Kayaking
Hot Spot, but with all the easily accessible High Mountain Lakes and Reservoirs, the amount of water is mind boggling! Not to mention Lake Powell that has as much coast line as the state of California! This photo was taken on Lake Powell, from isolated sandy beaches to the narrows of Navajo Canyon the diversity is amazing! There are dozens of places to throw the boat in that are just minutes from Park City. Trust me there is never an excuse for nothing to do around here! The Fly Fishing and Camping in the Backcountry can be awesome with a Kayak too!

The Uintas, Park City's Backyard!

The Uintas are a very unique Range.

They are the highest mountains in Utah and have an interesting feature, they run East to West! The Uintas host the Highest Peak in Utah, Kings Peak at 13,528 Feet. They are full of Rivers, Lakes, Streams, and incredible Hiking and Mountain Bike Trails. The lake are teaming with Brook, Cutthroat, and Rainbow Trout. If you want to hike in a bit you can get away from the throngs of people that invade from Salt Lake City during the Summer months. It's a great place for me , it only takes 15 minutes to get to one of the many Trailheads from my house!

Hiking in Park City

With the warm weather and mild Winter the early season Backcountry Hiking is great! I hiked up Shingle Creek to the Second Bridge and never saw another person! I was on the trail for about 2 1/2 hours and it was beautiful. Covered about 6 miles and the creeks were running clear and fast. Saw a few trout but I had 4 dogs with me and that ended the chance to fish! The Uintas are beautiful right now before the throngs of people invade for the summer. All the Aspens are popping and the wild mint and flowers make it smell and look surreal!

The Sad Park City, Alaska Connection

Sadly a local resident of Park City and neighbor was killed in an attempt to summit Denali
( Mt. McKinley) in Alsaka.

An avalanche swept two men to their deaths in Denali National Park, just a day after two climbers were killed there in a 1,900-foot fall, park officials said Sunday.

The pair from Utah were pulled to the base of 7,650-foot Mount Barille, where they were found amid snow and chunks of ice by rescue personnel late Friday, park spokeswoman Kris Fister said.

The torrent of snow carried Andre Callari, 33, of Salt Lake City and Brian Postlethwait, 32, of Park City 1,500 to 2,000 feet down the mountain, park rangers estimated.

As I reported all winter about the dangers of Avalanches in the Backcountry, once again the danger rings clear and hit close to home.

My condolences to the Friends & Family of the victims.
